Ok, I'm BACK

Yes yes, I know, I haven't been at this for a LONG time. More than a year, in fact. So how does one do this again? Oh right, just write stuff. OK.

Well, I have achieved a lot of milestones this last year (sadly, completing my thesis was not one of them). I did, however, start a fantastic job in a great field: human biology. It's merely a technical position (academics being considered our superior brethren), but I am learning SO much in terms of experimental molecular & cell biology, administration & management, as well as just about people. And the people I work with are fabulous and I love them all to bits!

My second major milestone was doing some running events. However, I think I went the wrong way around and started with the most difficult event route first: the Two Oceans half marathon. The others after that weren't nearly as strenuous (since they're missing a Southern Cross Drive). Nevertheless, I've been achieving new personal bests with every event, so here's hoping that I've come full circle & can attain an even better time at my second Two Oceans (I'd be happy with 2h00).

My times for 21.1km events
Two Oceans 2009: 2h15min
Robertson Miles for Smiles 2009: 2h10min
Landmarks 2009: 2h07min
Winelands 2009: 2h05min
West Coast 2010: 1h57min

I have a lot of soul-searching (and still thesis writing) to do this year - there is so much I want to do, so much I still want to experience... in a strange way I feel a bit like time is running out, like I won't be able to do these things forever and should embrace them while I can. Hence perhaps my slightly unusual choices in terms of what to do in my leisure time. Come to think of it the various "extra-mural" activities I do rarely to fail to raise eyebrows. Responses tend towards the following:

Me: I play ultimate frisbee.
Other: Um, you mean like, on the beach?
Me: *sigh* No0000... not on the beach...

Me: I've started amateur gymnastics.
Other: Really? Aren't you kind of old to be starting gymnastics?
Me: Yes. I. AM.

Me: I do pole dancing.
Other: Oh... *pause*
Me: And no, I'm not looking for an alternate profession. Besides, they'd kick me out for raucous behaviour anyway.

At least I still have running to keep me grounded... sometimes too much? I would like to get back into ballroom dancing and rock climbing again (although my feet shudder at the thought) - but the way I see it, I can dance when I'm old(er). However, there's only so long a woman my shape looks good in a leotard... or on a pole, for that matter! This begs the question: did I ever look good in a leotard? *shakes the magic 8-ball* = Very unlikely (mmmfff...)

You look good on the field and running and poledancing. And on other everyday occasions too. So you probably look good in a leotard. I can't imagine you don't.
