I'm baaaack!
What with My Space, Facebook and other online social networking facilities, who thinks about blogging anymore? Well, I've found that life becomes so fast-paced, so demanding, that even one's online "socializing" becomes more of an obligation than relaxation. What happened to a good old phone call/SMS to ask how it's going?
Well, in search of a more personal, slow-paced and undemanding place to muse, I return to the (now old-fashioned) world of blogging. Starting today. After my cuppa coffee. I promise.
*sip sip*
Ok, here goes:
After much frustration regarding the pace of my MSc progress (further hindered by my supervisor deciding to head to Germany for a year) I decided I needed some momentum. So I started job-hunting - not in any hurry, just to keep the tide of my life flowing in a certain direction. This half-hearted browsing of the job market led to an unexpected opportunity to join an international research institute concerned with energy, fuel & fuel cell research.
Starting out as a technical/research assistant, I found the transition from biochemistry to material- and electrochemistry pretty challenging. But with the help & support of some really great (and clever) people, I found my way over the last few months through the lab and into an office on the management floor. It involved some long hours and lots of determination, but I have certainly achieved and exceeded my goals for my first year in employment.
As for the non-career stuff, most people who know me know that in a couple months time I will be a Mrs - an exciting and intriguing prospect, but one which will make me very happy. Being rather unconventional individuals, we want to create a day that really speaks of us and our personalities. Preferably the better side of our personalities, but some of the other side might slip through *grin*
I am very excited to take this step with the person who compliments many of my traits, and knows how to handle the rest. Love is not about agreeing on everything and giving up your true self, but about being yourself and celebrating who your partner really is. Of course there are deal-breakers, but in the absence of any of these it's about acceptance, respect, shared ambitions and, of course, fun :-) The latter cannot be underestimated - it is the instigator of a relationship, needs to be set aside a bit later to make room for the serious relationship negotiations, but must make a re-entry into the "couple" dynamic to ensure long-term happiness in the relationship.
Personally, having negotiated & battled & grown with someone even more obstinate than myself, I have become who I want to be. And I will never let fun out of my life, because that would negate all the hard work put into it - what's the point of putting in so much dedication if it doesn't make you happy in the end?
So here's to all my friends who have been on this road with me - those taking a similar plunge into the unknown, and those who are thriving in independence and don't have to share the toys *wink*
