Memory, turn your face...

We all want to keep souvenirs of our past experiences - things to remind us where we were, where we come from, why we are who we are. Depending on the nature of the experience, we either want to remember good times, or we don't want to forget the lessons it taught us, so as not to make the same mistakes again. Sometimes we make the mistakes anyway, or we try so hard not to that we make other mistakes. Again, we learn.

What is it we really want to remember and why? Is it the companionship we felt on an excursion, the pride of an achievement, the sadness of a loss, the happiness of doing something we love? A way of holding onto things we knew wouldn't last, brief precious moments that dissipate as quickly as they appeared - we want proof it was there, proof it happened. The human mind is fickle, we forget, but we want our lives to be witnessed, to be a story, etched into objects (physical or virtual) to look at and remember/forget when it suits us.

There's no moving forward if you hold onto the past. And there's no going back ever. The only thing you bring with you always is friends... they're what's worth remembering. And the special thing about friends is they understand when you need to move on. You can talk to them about good times in the past, and they remind you of the good times you're having right now. Create new memories, leave the old ones. I've taken the good, and some of the bad, but I trust that old dogs can learn new tricks. But I am content with where I am & who I am, and I have infinitely much to give... and to learn.

Ah yes, memories. They are the woodworm in the ship of my mind.

The question you need to ask is: Does my experiences/memories define me? or
Are they just the scenery along the road I travel that I can enjoy or learn from?

You are an eternal being and as such your course will be influenced by events and people, but they will never change who you REALLY are. Who you are depends on you alone, no-one else has that power.

So chuck all these things that you might cling to as the fetters of yesterday that they are and stretch towards that great unknown that lies before you. Full of potential, full of experiences asyet unknown.

Life is a journey, never stay on the bus, get off now and then.

My post was written in a state of emotional tension & has been revised slightly to a less charged, more realistic form :P Thank you for your comments :-)
